Why You Can Look to Ford to Get a Safe Used Car for Your Teenager

Ford is to the auto industry as apple pie is to dessert: they both are as American as it gets. So it’s only natural that parents looking for safe vehicles for teenagers would turn to the Blue Oval for some great choices. And indeed there are some. 

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the venerable, respected independent testing organization, Consumer Reports, puts out an annual list of “Safe Cars for Teenagers.” Categorized by size and type (cars vs. SUVs), three used Ford models were among the recommendations.

The list included the 2017-19 Ford Fusion as a good choice among midsized cars; among the best choices included were the 2021 or newer Ford Bronco Sport (small SUV) and the 2020 or newer Ford Explorer (midsized SUV). 

Qualifying for inclusion on this list meant measuring up to some pretty strict standards:

• When they were new, they all were scored highly in five IIHS tests: three crash tests, a test of roof crush-resistance and an evaluation of how well head movement was controlled in a crash by the head restraints.
• They all had audible, hard-to-ignore reminders to fasten seatbelts.
• They all had the electronic stability control mandated by federal regulation since 2012.
• They all scored average or better on emergency and routine-handling tests and braking tests.
• Their secondary controls and displays were evaluated for usability and how distracting they were.
• No very heavy or very light vehicles were included, nor were any vehicles too powerful for their size.
