Why a Ford Hybrid Pickup May Be the Goldilocks Truck for You

Higher gas prices are prompting people to look take a hard look at electrified vehicles. Not ready to take the all-electric plunge? Americans have been gravitating toward hybrids, which combine electrification with a gasoline engine to provide better miles per gallon. Ford has a couple to choose from: the F-150 Hybrid and the Maverick Hybrid. 

These are both what are called “mild hybrids,” meaning they don’t plug in and can’t go far on just electric power. But they do have some great advantages:

2026 Ford F-150 Hybrid

The 2026 F-150 Hybrid is available on myriad F-150 models. The powerplant is a 3.5-liter PowerBoost™ Full Hybrid V6 paired with a 47-hp electric motor. Combined, they offer 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 11,000 lbs. If necessary, the 1.5-kWh battery can be used to power tools/appliances. This set-up was named to the 2025 list of “Wards 10 Best Engines,” repeating its 2024 win. “Simply put, the Ford powertrain outshines all others in the full-size pickup segment. It’s powerful, smooth and quiet, and it is stunningly efficient for a vehicle its size.” It offers EPA-estimated mileage of 22 city/24 highway.

2026 Ford Maverick Hybrid

The Ford Maverick is America’s best-selling hybrid pickup. It’s smaller than its F-150 sibling, and equipped with the hybrid powertrain (XL, XLT, Lariat trims) The Maverick been very popular – for good reason. It can haul up to 1,500 lbs. and tow up to 2,000 lbs. Plenty for urban cowboys. The engine is a 2.5-liter inline-four; combined with the electric motor it puts out 191 horsepower, can tow up to 4,000 lbs. and gets 38 mpg combined city/highway. The Ford Maverick XL with hybrid engine starts at $28,145.

Car and Driver has named the original Maverick to its 10Best Trucks and SUVs list since it came out in 2022, but enthusiastically welcomed the hybrid when it became available – even more so when a four-wheel drive option was offered last year.
